3 Ways to Avoid the Rest Home

16 Dec 3 Ways to Avoid the Rest Home

THE NUMBER OF OLDER PERSONS IN OUR COUNTRY IS RAPIDLY INCREASING, according to a recent study done by the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID).  Since 1990, the percentage of those 65 years of age and older has tripled.  And the fastest growing segment of this population is those 85 years of age and older.  In fact, the number of older persons is expected to grow from 33.5 million to 69.4 million by the year 2030.

photo_11643_20100117Along with age, come many changes in our health.  Vision is one of the leading health concerns for the elderly.  The eye is the organ most vulnerable to the process of aging.  In the same study, for people age 70 or older, 18% reported vision problems.

People with vision impairments are more likely to have trouble walking and getting in an out of beds and chairs.  AN OLDER PERSON NEEDS AS MUCH AS 3 X THE AMOUNT OF LIGHT IN ORDER TO PERCEIVE SHAPES, OBJECTS AND DETAILS because the pupil decreases in diameter and is less responsive when light enters the eye.

When vision is compromised, there is more chance of accident and injury.  AND ACCIDENTS ARE THE SIXTH MOST COMMON REASON FOR DEATH IN PEOPLE AGE 65 AND OLDER.  In the U.S., about half of all accidents among the elderly are due to falling.  2.3 million are injured, 370,000 end up hospitalized and 9,000 will die.

If so, you are among the 82% of Americans who would rather continue to live in their homes than move to some type of assisted living.  With a few savvy design changes, it is very possible.

Here are 3 easy design ideas to help you get started:

1)    Install plenty of lighting especially on stairways and walkways.  Falling on descent is the most common way people are injured.

2)    Use all types of illumination in a room.  Three categories are Ambient (general), Task (specific are) and Accent (mood).

3)    Use shades on light fixtures and/or frosted light bulbs.  This will help to cut down on glare.
